The National Skills Commission (NSC) has released its latest annual overview of the labour market, ‘Australian Jobs 2021’. This examines the impact of COVID on jobs particularly for youth and includes trends across states and territories. Research and analysis for the report shows a broad shift to service industries along with an increased emphasis on post-school qualifications from employers.

The Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission (GEDC) is assisting the Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ECCI) to conduct a workforce needs survey of Esperance businesses and employers. The online survey asks employers about their current workforce needs and whether they are experiencing labour and training gaps in their respective sectors.

The Australian Livestock and Rural Transport Association (ALRTA) and Livestock Transporters Association of Tasmania (LTAT) have opened registrations for their Combined 2021 National-State Conference. The event will be livestreamed from 9am – 1pm, Saturday 23 October 2021. The conference program will include keynote addresses from the Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport with topics relating to skills shortages, infrastructure, access, new technologies and mental health.
The online conference will include opportunities for all participants to ask questions and participate in discussions. Click here to register. The Federal government has announced it will provide an additional $184 million to aid international aviation until March 2022. The money will include a continuation of JobKeeper-style payments to pilots and cabin crew. A further $64 million for airports including Perth will pay for screening of passengers and baggage. This additional funding will aid the sector to maintain its workforce, to continue exports and imports and provide the ability for industry to ramp up operations quickly once international restrictions ease.
A new research paper from the UK aims to evaluate the benefits of micro-credentials amid the growing uptake of the learning format during the COVID-19 crisis. ‘Micro-credentials: The new frontier of adult education and training’ by James Robson, Deputy Director of Centre for Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance at Oxford University, says research suggests that those who take micro-credential courses have variable returns in the labour market.

The State Government held the third of ten planned regional skills summits in Geraldton in the last week of September. The Geraldton-Mid West Regional Skills Summit will generate further practical actions and new and innovative ideas that will form the basis of a local action plan to meet the region's unique workforce needs. More than 30 government and regional business leaders from a range of sectors including the agriculture, construction, education and training, healthcare, hospitality and tourism, mining and retail industries attended the event.

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) and Australian Government have celebrated the efforts of Australia’s truck drivers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Together with Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz, the ATA has thanked industry members who are working on the frontline to keep the country supplied stating, "Unless the trucks are moving, the economy is not going."
