Industry OverviewThere are more than 50,000 jobs supported within Australia’s aviation industry, which is responsible for contributing in excess of $5 billion into the economy. In Western Australia this industry continues to play a vital role in servicing remote and offshore destinations in and around the State. The services offered by ground and flight operations impact on emergency services, agriculture, tourism, recreational sport and the resources sector.
Aviation - Flight Operations involves the preparation and movement of aircraft, crew, cargo, passengers and baggage through controlled airspace to a destination. Aviation - Ground Operations encompasses airport operations, aerodrome maintenance and management, ground handling and other affiliated aviation support services. In this instance, it excludes the mechanical and electrical engineering/servicing of aircraft. Aviation – Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) or Drones refer to unmanned, remotely piloted systems. These systems are widely deployed in many industry settings, including but not limited to: Aviation, Port Management, Construction, Mining and Resources and Defence. Licensing RequirementsThere are licensing and certification requirements for many roles within Aviation. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is responsible for issuing a range of licences, endoresements, permits and approvals for any aviation activities to occur, including RPAS/drone operations and ensures both businesses and individuals adhere to the Australian Civil Aviation Laws. Aviation Training PackageAustralian Industry Standards (AIS) is the Skills Service Organisations (SSO) with responsibility for the Aviation Training Package. In addition, you can also follow the links on their website to find more information regarding their Aviation Industry Outlook and Aviation Industry Snapshots released annually or to find out how you can be involved in the Aviation Industry Reference Committee (IRC).
To ensure feedback from WA stakeholders has been included, the LDSC regularly provides advice and recommendations to the AIS on the development of Training Package materials as well as the development of the Aviation Industry Outlook and Industry Snapshots.
