Industry OverviewThe Retail Industry is vitally important as it impacts the global economy. It can be described as the process of selling consumer goods and services to customers through multiple channels of distribution to earn a profit.
The LDSC covers Retail, Community Pharmacy and Floristry. Retail Food Retailing including supermarket and grocery stores, fruit and vegetable grocers, liquor stores and other specialised food retailing (such as cake or bread retailing not manufactured on the same premises). Other Store-Based Retailing is the largest area of retail and covers the buying/selling of furniture, floor coverings, houseware, manchester, textile goods, electrical, electronic and gas appliance goods, computer and computer peripheral equipment, hardware and building supplies, garden supplies, recreational goods such as sport and camping equipment, entertainment media, toy and games, newspapers and books, marine equipment, clothing, footwear, watch and jewellery, other personal accessory retailing department stores, stationery, antique and used goods, flower retailing, other store-based retailing such as art gallery operation and ice retailing. Non-Store Retailing refers to goods being sold without the use of a shopfront or a physical store. These include direct mail, selling of books, cosmetics, goods, internet, milk vending, mobile food and vending machine operations. Retail Commission-Based Buying and/or Selling includes milk vending, buying service, books, cosmetics, health foods and selling service (such as auction services). These sectors mainly sells goods to the public on a fee or commission basis. Community Pharmacy Community Pharmacy is focused on the retail (buying and selling) of goods sold within a pharmacy consisting of retailing toiletries, cosmetics, perfume, dispensing medicine, patent medicines and prescription drugs. Floristry Floristry includes the cutting of flowers, display foliage, and dried flowers designed by a florist. The selling of a diverse range of floristry products can be conducted in store or through online channels. |
Licensing RequirementsThe licensing requirements in Retail are similar to Wholesale, where licences are required for restricted products such as Tobacco, Alcohol and Medicine/Poison. Additionally, a licence, certificate or ticket must be obtained to legally be allowed to serve or operate.

How Can I Begin a Career in Retail?These industries do not require the completion of a qualification as a condition of entry. However, for career progression opportunities it is recommended to undertake relevant training which will help future students/employees to gain a deeper understanding of these customer focused sectors.
Keep in mind that organisations within these sectors, often conduct their own in-house training and any special requirements are usually obtained during employment if deemed necessary by the employer.
