Sixty new train drivers are poised to graduate from BHP’s Pilbara Rail Academy Traineeship Program, created last year to meet the growing skills shortage in Western Australia. The academy recruits have a range of life skills and experiences, including former Uber drivers, ex-military personnel and mums looking for a career change after raising children.
BHP is investing $20 million (AUD) in the academy program, which aims to employ and train 200 new train drivers over three years. The WA Government Shipping and Supply Chain Taskforce requested comment on their scope. The Taskforce will invite stakeholder comment on a discussion paper to be released in the fourth quarter of 2022. The Taskforce will examine:
1 The potential for domestic long-distance freight to be carried by coastal shipping between WA and eastern states 2 Co-operation in the development of a national strategic shipping fleet 3 The development of local WA training facilities and maritime career pathways 4 Opportunities to develop multi-modal responsiveness to supply chain disruption, including freight on interstate routes and also to remote WA regions 5 Opportunities to improve supply chain co-ordination and service quality at WA ports. Civmec has invested in shipbuilding and sustainment capability with a new 70-metre high hall supporting marine, defence and resources sectors located in Henderson, Western Australia. The new ship assembly hall makes it one of the largest fabrication workshops in Australia.
Shipbuilder Civmec and marine services specialist Serco have joined forces in pursuit of the LAND 8710 Phase 1A program that will deliver the next generation landing craft or littoral maneuver vessels for the Australian Army. This is a medium class vessel capable of shipping Army’s future vehicles in riverine and shore environments. The team designed the ‘Oboe’ littoral maneuver vessel medium (LMV-M) to meet the needs of the ADF - LAND 8710-1A program. Australian Industry Standards (AIS) are seeking validation of revised training package materials which includes four qualifications, five Skill Sets and 31 Units of Competency. These draft products address changes in technology and Defence processes and provide an aligned career pathway for Defence and logistics support personnel to enhance workforce mobility across the sector.

The register details all vocational education and training qualifications available for WA secondary school students, industry advice for schools and RTOs on the suitability of qualifications students, and delivery requirements to meet industry standards. Australian Industry Standards (AIS) recently released the 2022 Supply Chain Industry Outlook that identifies six megatrends impacting the supply chain. The Outlook focuses on the following industries in the supply chain that AIS supports: Transport and Logistics, Aviation, Maritime, and Rail.
The report is a snapshot of a continually evolving story that is intended to alert and inform a wide audience and enhance the industry’s capacity to act on workforce development initiatives.
