These meetings are an important opportunity for industry employers to discuss issues affecting workforce development in WA such as skills and labour shortages and training needs. This feedback is essential in ensuring we provide real-time advice to the State Government into areas such as:

Times to be confirmed The Commonwealth Government appointed a Strategic Fleet Taskforce on 20 Oct 2022 to guide the establishment of up to 12 Australian-flagged and crewed vessels. The Taskforce will report to Government in two phases. The first phase is to report high-level strategic objectives by the end 2022. During the first phase, shipping, maritime and other stakeholders will be able to make submissions to shape the vision for a strategic fleet through an open public consultation process. Australian businesses and industry have the opportunity to participate in the next generation of contracts to deliver base services around Australia and support Defence’s key capabilities. It follows the release of the Request for Proposal (RFP) for a fourth generation of contracts. Small and medium-sized businesses, Indigenous businesses, as well as social and veteran enterprises are welcomed to consider becoming part of the supply chain supporting Australian bases. Base services provide significant employment opportunities, contributing to a strong and resilient domestic Defence industry.
Current contracts for base services are due to expire in mid-2024. Industry can go to AusTender for more information. Veterans’ Health Week (VHW) is a Department of Veterans’ Affairs program that aims to generate interest in, and raise awareness around, improving health and wellbeing for former and current serving Australian Defence Force personnel, their families and carers. Four priority health and wellbeing themes for VHW rotate on an annual basis: Get Moving (physical activity); Eat Well (nutrition); Mental Wellbeing Matters (mental wellness); and Keep Connected (social connection). Applications close 19 September 2022.
Over the next decade, more than $1 billion will be invested by the Federal Government to upgrade 73 Australian Defence Force (ADF) Reserve and Cadet facilities across Australia.
The infrastructure investment will support the growth of the ADF Cadets by 10 percent over the next year and is just one component of a number of initiatives being implemented to enhance the cadet program, such as; o Defence will increase numbers in existing cadet units create new units to complement broader Government initiatives supporting youth development and skilling. Future cadets will be engaged in: o STEM-focused activities including cyber security, virtual reality simulation, robotics, and flight simulation to supplement traditional skills developed through the program.

The Defence Industry Internship Program (DIIP) and QTAC matches small to medium defence industry organisations with 3rd and 4th year engineering students for a 12-week (450 hour) internship. Host employers will access to university undergraduates nearing the completion of their degrees who have been carefully matched to business requirements, bringing with them a range of skills in new technologies and current research. Employers will receive $515 per week for hosting an intern, with additional subsidies available for the intern’s wages.

Applications close 31 May 2022 with internships commencing between mid-November and the end of January 2023. With at least representative from each industry sector: Maritime, Retail, Aviation, Road Transport, Rail, Warehousing and Logistics.
