Truck drivers have been added to the National Skills Commission’s skills shortage list. The Skills Priority List provides a detailed view of occupations in shortage as well as the future demand for occupations in Australia.
Trucking is one of 129 occupations that weren’t considered in shortage in 2021 but are now in shortage in 2022. You can see the skills priority list here. Australian businesses and industry have the opportunity to participate in the next generation of contracts to deliver base services around Australia and support Defence’s key capabilities. It follows the release of the Request for Proposal (RFP) for a fourth generation of contracts. Small and medium-sized businesses, Indigenous businesses, as well as social and veteran enterprises are welcomed to consider becoming part of the supply chain supporting Australian bases. Base services provide significant employment opportunities, contributing to a strong and resilient domestic Defence industry.
Current contracts for base services are due to expire in mid-2024. Industry can go to AusTender for more information. The State Government is extending access to subsidised training to support refugees and asylum seekers from Ukraine and Afghanistan as they seek to take up job opportunities in Western Australia. The new initiative will support this cohort to gain skills and sustainable employment, as well as efforts to build a pipeline of skilled workers to take up job opportunities in occupations experiencing skills shortages in coming years. Access to subsidised training will be made available from January 2023 for the following visa holders:

To check eligibility and find out more click Here Women in Trucking Australia (WiTA) has announced that its ‘Foot in the Door’ program will receive crucial funding from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI), supported by the Federal Government. the collaborative pilot project – set to be launched early 2023 – will support inexperienced female heavy vehicle drivers into trucking careers nationally. With women considered to be one of the most underutilised industry resources the initiative will be a critical step in encouraging women to join the transport and logistics industries.
