The State Government has exempted Western Australian businesses from paying payroll tax on wage subsidies announced in the 2020-21 Commonwealth Government Budget. The Boosting Apprenticeships Commencements wage subsidy is for apprentices or trainees of eligible businesses who commence and undertake training between October 5, 2020 and September 30, 2021. The scheme allows eligible businesses of all sizes, industries and locations to be reimbursed up to 50 per cent of an apprentice or trainee's gross wages up to $7,000 per quarter.
The payroll tax exemption on these subsidies will ensure WA businesses recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic receive the full benefit of the program. This payroll tax exemption is estimated to cost about $4 million, with wages for up to 5,600 trainees eligible for the payroll tax relief.
