Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery celebrated the training sector's brightest stars at the 2021 WA Training Awards at Crown Perth announcing eight individuals and four organisations as winners. Now in its 27th year, the awards recognise the outstanding achievements of apprentices, trainees, employers and training organisations. The LDSC was delighted to attend the event again this year and sends our congratulations to the winners and finalists for their amazing efforts.

The Rail Industry Reference Committee has submitted the Case for Endorsement and draft Training Package materials for the Rail Customer Service project to the Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) for their consideration. The materials include updates to two qualifications, one Skill Set and eight associated Units of Competency, addressing customer service skills and knowledge related to ticketing and security requirements.

On behalf of the Aviation Industry Reference Committee, the TAC has drafted materials for this project and is requesting stakeholder feedback. The materials for the Aviation Supervision project include the addition of a new specialisation stream to the Certificate IV in Aviation (Aviation Supervision), incorporating Units of Competency from the recently deleted Certificate IV Aviation (Flight Operation Supervision).
The TAC has also removed the unit AVIF0029 Implement threat and error management strategies from the core that was previously added in error. To further assist operators and individuals impacted by the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) introduced additional alleviation measures to provide support to the aviation industry until 31 March 2022.
CASA EX92/21 - as amended by CASA EX100/21, provides alleviation from: * flight reviews and proficiency checks * operator proficiency checks * proficiency in emergency procedures * balloon instructor ratings for pilots, aircrew, cabin crew, AOC holders, flight training organisations, and Part 137 operators. To find out more, visit their COVID-19 page To reduce the WA shortage of truck drivers, the expanded Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations Skill Set will commence in Term 4, in the South-West at South Regional TAFE. This follows four months of a pilot program in Perth. Successful participants obtain a Heavy Rigid (HR), Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC) vehicle licence and may apply for a forklift (LF) licence. The course is free for eligible students and the Practical Driving Instruction Training, assessment and licencing costs are $500 for concession students and up to $1,250 for non-concession students.

The SkillsWest Careers and Employment Expo along with the WorldSkills Australia National Championships, was hosted at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on the 26th - 28th of August. This event showcased the ultimate skills, training and jobs opportunities for WA’s current and future workforce.
The LDSC team had the opportunity to attend this event to network and see WA's talented floristry competitor. Click here for more information. The LDSC team recently undertook a brief regional trip to Geraldton this month. During the visit, the LDSC to met with the Airport, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Central Regional TAFE, Mid-West Port and the Mid-West Development Commission. Some common themes emerging from discussion points included but were not limited to the evolving landscape of workforce development, regional housing and workforce shortages impacting Mid-West supply chains. The LDSC thanks all those who participated in the consultations. The LDSC is planning to undertake a second regional trip to the area later this year to meet with more industries under our remit (i.e., Aviation, Road Transport, Retail, Community Pharmacy, Floristry, Warehousing and Logistics, Maritime, Ports and Stevedoring, Freight Forwarding, Rail, Postal and Wholesaling).
