AIS has extended the closing date of its Industry Skills Survey. This survey inviting responses from industry about key issues affecting skills and workforce development is now open and all industry stakeholders are encouraged to participate. Your input will assist the development of the 2022 Industry Outlooks. The skills surveys aim to build a whole-of-industry picture and will be used to assist in identifying new or emerging skills needs and help inform training package development. The skills survey can be completed online and should take around 5-10 minutes. Industry representatives are also invited to make submissions.

The Federal Government opened applications to 31 March 2022 for the operation of eleven Industry Clusters to replace the 67 Industry Reference Committees (IRC) and six Skills Service Organisations (SSO). Industry Clusters will be groups of aligned industries with a strategic leadership role to identify, forecast and respond to the current and emerging skills needs and workforce challenges of their industries. Industry Clusters will strengthen employer leadership and engagement in the national VET system and drive collaboration to meet the evolving needs of industry and employers. It is anticipated an independent assurance function will replace the Australian Industry and Skills Committee by 1 January 2023.

Regional businesses looking for extra support in their business are encouraged to take part in Curtin’s Regional Work-Link Program. The program matches business needs with business students at Curtin University, providing support for businesses and opportunities for students to gain valuable work experience through integrated learning. This participation also introduces a future workforce to regional employment and lifestyle opportunities. Students can add value in the areas of Business, Logistics and Supply Chain, Management and other subjects.

The National Skills Commission has released their State of Australia’s Skills 2021 report, which assesses current, emerging and future workforce skills needs and provides a new mapping tool for Australia’s portfolio of skills for the first time. The report examines the impact of automation on jobs, as well as the skills that are emerging in the labour market.
The Federal Government has cleared the road for a new truck driving apprenticeship to help secure Australia’s economic recovery. The new national apprenticeship, Certificate III in Driving Operations, will see the industry in conjunction with States and Territories develop a truck driving apprenticeship for the first time, following endorsement of a new framework by Federal, State and Territory Skills Ministers. Each State and Territory will now consider adding the apprenticeship to their training programs, with existing Commonwealth funding for apprenticeships and training.

The National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER) have recently released a report supporting how the Vocational Education and Training (*VET) Systems is best placed to support employers address skills shortages induced by lower migration and changing economic conditions and technological changes. The research examines factors that influence an employers decision to engage with the National VET system.

The Victorian Transport Authority with support of the Victorian Government has established a Driver Delivery Program. This is an intensive eight-day course that trains participants to be competent in operating heavy vehicles and obtain a Heavy Rigid (HR) or Heavy Combination (HC) licence on completion. Participants receive a foundation of driving skills needed.to operate heavy vehicles safely i.e. OSH, Load Restraint, Fatigue Management, Loading Docks, Metropolitan and Rural Driving, Cabin Drills, Road Craft, Vehicle Inspection and Chain of Responsibility and Risk Reduction Techniques.
In related news the Tasmanian Transport Association will launch a pilot program to bring new job-ready heavy vehicle drivers into the transport industry. Supported by a $80,000 grant from the Tasmanian government, the program will cover key areas like fatigue management and load restraint. The program will link participants with potential employers.
